Francisco Pizarro: A Brief Biography
Early Life and Exploration
Francisco Pizarro was born in Trujillo, Spain, in 1478. He was an explorer and conquistador who played a pivotal role in the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire. In 1524, he joined forces with Diego de Almagro and Hernando de Luque to explore and conquer the Inca Empire.
Conquest of the Inca Empire
In 1532, Pizarro and his men landed on the coast of Peru and began their march inland. They quickly forged alliances with native tribes who were resentful of Inca rule. In 1533, Pizarro's forces captured the Inca emperor, Atahualpa, and ransomed him for a room full of gold. However, Atahualpa was later executed by Pizarro.
Founding of Lima
After conquering the Inca Empire, Pizarro founded the city of Lima in 1535. Lima became the capital of Peru and a major center of Spanish colonial rule.
Death and Legacy
Pizarro was assassinated in 1541 by supporters of Diego de Almagro. He is remembered as one of the most ruthless and successful conquistadors in Spanish history. His conquests in Peru laid the foundation for Spanish rule in South America for centuries.
